Writing in his Voetbal International column, Marco van Basten blasted Cruyff’s Velvet revolution at Ajax, calling it “One big joke”.
Now Johan Cruyff has hit back at the former Netherlands striker, saying Ajax are embarking on a new path due to the lack of quality in Dutch football, and believes Van Basten is unwise to criticize a club when he is Netherlands assistant coach.
Cruyff is quoted by NOS saying, “We are at Ajax embarked on a new path. There are mistakes made, and I will also have made them. I do not know why Mark says this. Dutch football today delivers no achievements. You have to do something about it.”
He added, “I think it is not wise from his position to criticize a club,”
“That just does not seem very sensible. Maybe he hopes to accomplish something. Some kind of cover or something, I do not know.”
One criticism of Cruyff is that he cannot help Ajax fully if he lives abroad, he said on this, “Whether I am present enough at Ajax? I have submitted a plan, i never said I would be employed. That can not be when you live abroad.”
