Cillessen was named Ajax player of the year on Sunday after an excellent season which has seen the goalkeeper only concede 27 goals, the least in the Eredivisie.
Quoted by Voetbal International, coach Frank de Boer lavished praise on the 26-year-old, who he believes is the only player in the Ajax squad to perform to a high standard, in a disappointing campaign for the club.
De Boer said, “He’s one of the few who has run a very good and consistent season. He is actually the only one. Least passed defense means something. Of course he does not do it alone, but it says something about Cillessen. Not only as a goalkeeper, but also as the leader of the rearguard.”
“Can he reach the level of world goalkeepers as Edwin van der Sar and Manuel Neuer? I think he can get very close, ”
On a potential move from Ajax for Cillessen, De Boer added, “Certainly not. I can imagine that after Euro 2016, when Orange qualifies for it, maybe he see’s a nice challenge elsewhere. But for now, his heart still lies entirely in Ajax.”
