The 18-year-old is struggling for form this season and is currently on an individual plan at PSV to work on his fitness.
Ihattaren was called up to the last Netherlands squad, but had to pull out through an illness and has not yet made his Oranje debut.
Asked about Ihattaren, De Boer told NOS’s Studio Voetbal, “At PSV they have a plan for him. He was of course ill during the international match period. I think he started twice at PSV before that. That is going in the right direction. He still has enough time in any case. Let’s hope he is doing well. Ihattaren is of course a great talent.
“Before the international period I had quite a lot of contact with him, but not at the moment. Of course I did when he signed out, but not after that. But I hope to keep in touch with everyone, including Ihattaren. A national coach can help, I will certainly not let that go. And I have contact with almost everyone including Mo.”
Pierre van Hooijdonk asked if Ihattaren could drop into the Netherlands U21 squad, and De Boer replied, “I think so. We did everything we could to let him play for the Dutch national team. Because we have a very large see talent in him. He certainly belongs in the Juniors, but he will have to show that. He has to play every week and the Juniors also have great talents in his position.”
