The home side headed into 2016 in an almost impossible position, sitting bottom with only one win all season and eight points behind nearest rivals Cambuur. However with a win over Excelsior, De Graafschap have given themselves a chance of survival.
The first half saw neither side take control, and although chances fell the way of both Tom van Weert and Cas Peters, the deadlock was not broken.
Finally halfway through the second half De Graafschap scored, with Peters taking advantage of an error from Excelsior keeper Tom Muyters to net from close range. Excelsior failed to respond and in injury time Vincent Vermeij sealed the victory.
The win moves De Graafschap onto eight points, while Excelsior remain 14th.
