The 34-year-old is back in the Eredivisie 12 years after departing Feyenoord for Mallorca. He has since been with Villarreal, Swansea City, Napoli, and Eintracht Frankfurt, among others. He has been with the Greek side OFI Crete since 2020.
The 14-time Netherlands international becomes the 11th new player for Sparta Rotterdam this summer and offers Maurice Steijn some experience in midfield.
Technical director Gerard Nijkamp told the Sparta website. “It should be clear that by bringing in Jonathan we immediately add a lot of experience to our team. In addition to his experience, we all know Jonathan’s qualities, both playing football on the ball and controlling in midfield, which will provide an impulse. We expect that with the arrival of Jonathan the selection will be complete, barring a possible lucky break.”
