Frenkie de Jong has given his first big interview to Barcelona TV since his move to the Catalan giants was confirmed.

The midfielder’s summer move from Ajax to Barcelona for €86 million was confirmed in January.

Frenkie de Jong told Barcelona TV, “As a child I already dreamed of Barcelona. I like the players and the playing style. You could call Barcelona my dream club. My first memory of the club is a stadium tour through Camp Nou. We were on holiday in Barcelona, I was about six years old. Three years ago I went to a match with my girlfriend, against Real Betis. That was a nice experience. ”

On his style he stated, “The style of play of Ajax and Barcelona is comparable. Both clubs want to play football well and attack, with a lot of possession. I am also a player who often wants to have the ball. But there are still many areas for improvement in my game. I have to score more often and deliver more assists. I have to become better defensively. I have to become physically stronger and develop my left foot further.”

On Lionel Messi, he said, “I am looking forward to playing with him. In my view, he is the best and most complete footballer of all time. His left foot is incredible and he is so smart. Messi is of a different level. I look forward to playing together with all players at Barcelona.”

On following in the footsteps of fellow Dutchmen such as Johan Cruijff, “I know the good connection between Barcelona and Dutch players. Especially because of Johan Cruijff of course. Cruijff means to me what he means to everyone: he was pure football. Cruijff has renewed football, with the overall football of the Dutch team in 1974. He was an incredibly good footballer and a great person.
