De Jong was picked as the first ever Nations League talent of the tournament shortly after Netherlands 1-0 defeat to Portugal.
Speaking to NOS, De Jong was critical of his own performance, “They kept things well compact, but we have not done enough today. I didn’t either. I could have done more and created too little with the free man and found too little solutions between the defense and the midfield of them.”
However, De Jong feels the Nations League has been a success overall for the Dutch national team, “We have shown who we are as the Netherlands and I think everyone is taking us into account now. We have defeated large countries, gained experience with semi-finals and finals. We must first reach the European Championship, but we will take that with us if we make it. “
