Frenkie de Jong still believes Ajax have a chance of reaching the next round of the Champions League, despite the 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday.

The soon to be Barcelona midfielder got a taste of what life is like against Real Madrid on Tuesday and after the game he told Ziggo Sport that he enjoyed clashing with Luka Modric, “It was certainly nice to face Modric. That motivates you extra naturally. He is a natural talent and it is really difficult to put pressure on him.”

De Jong admitted that his performances in the Eredivisie had been poor recently, especially the loss to Heracles on Saturday, but he felt he improved against Real Madrid, “Saturday and in those matches before, I was less open-minded. There was more doubt in my actions. Today it was indeed a bit better.”

In three weeks time, Ajax need to overturn a 2-1 deficit in Madrid, but De Jong feels they still have a chance, “We must show courage. If we play in BernabĂ©u just like tonight, then nothing has been decided.”
