PSV Eindhoven striker Luuk de Jong has explained why he asked to come off minutes before the penalty shootout loss against Atletico Madrid.

de jong atlPSV’s top scorer was substituted with two minutes to go in extra time, with his replacement Luciano Narsingh going on to miss the decisive penalty, which cost his side a place in the last eight of the Champions League.

Speaking after the game, De Jong stated that an injury had forced his hand at the end of the game.

He said to SBS6, “I just could not. In the end I jumped again in the air and I felt when landing both hamstrings,”

“I didn’t want to take any chances to break something. And we had a substitution left, so why not?”

On the result he added,  “This is such a shame,”

“It’s disappointing because we played good football and made ​​it very difficult for Atletico. The penalty shootout could fall either way and unfortunately it was not ours.”
