Phillip Cocu has confirmed that Luuk de Jong will remain PSV captain for the upcoming season.

The striker was crucial during his first two seasons at PSV, helping them win back to back title’s, but he has just come off a terrible campaign, netting only eight times in 31 Eredivisie matches.

De Jong lost his starting spot towards the end of the season, with Jurgen Locadia and Sam Lammers challenging for his position. However, speaking at his press conference on Monday, coach Phillip Cocu showed support to De Jong and confirmed that he will remain captain.

He said, “I’m not going to deny the captain’s armband to him, because he could have a tough year. He has shown for years that he is a very important link in our team. No one denies that the past year was below par, it is up to him to give a response. If not, then we will act accordingly.

“The responsibility must be shared anyway because a number of supporting players left. But you can not escape it as captain that you have a little more responsibility to the outside world but also within the selection.”
