After breaking into the Ajax first-team last season, De Ligt has become one of Europe’s most sought-after young defenders with Barcelona, Manchester City and Bayern Munich all linked with the 18-year-old.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, De Ligt stated he prefers to remain in Amsterdam but believes another year without European football would damage his career.

He said, “For a young boy, it is important to play European football.

“It is preferable, of course, the Champions League, but otherwise it should be the group stage of the Europa League, a year like this for a young player is ok, but a second season would be problematic. But I hope to be in the red and white next year as well, so I have that key.

“Ajax is my favourite club, also the club where I grew up, but I also have to think about my own career, but for now this is the best option and it would be very nice to say goodbye with a trophy in my hands. That it does not seem to be possible to become a champion anymore, gnaws. “
