Stefan de Vrij began on the bench for Inter and he watched on as Sassuolo took the lead in the fourth minute through Francesco Caputo.
However, the game had turned on its head by half-time with Romelu Lukaku scoring from the penalty spot, then Cristiano Biraghi made it 2-1.
De Vrij was then introduced soon after the break to provide some defensive stability and Inter should have made it 3-1 when the ball fell to Roberto Gagliardini just yards out, but he somehow struck the bar.
In the 81st minute, Ashley Young conceded a penalty which Domenico Berardi scored to make it 2-2. Inter seemed to then win the game when Borja Valero made it 3-2, but Sassuolo earned a point as Giangiacomo Magnani scored from a corner.
Milan Skriniar saw red in the latter stages and Inter were left frustrated by the end. They only get one point and are now eight behind Juventus with eleven games to go.
