Depay’s big money transfer to Manchester United was confirmed before PSV’s final two matches against Heracles and ADO Den Haag, but the winger wasn’t due to undergo his medical with the Premier League club until after the ties.
Both Manchester United and PSV wanted the 21-year-old to sit out of both games in fear of injury, but Depay defied them both due to his determination to become Eredivisie top scorer, which he achieved with 22 goals.
Depay told De Telegraaf, “I really wanted to play and for our coach [Phillip Cocu] it was not a big issue.
“But PSV and Manchester United were not pleased. They both suggested that I sit out because of fear over injuries.
“I wanted to become top scorer and break the total points record with PSV. So I absolutely wanted to play.”
Depay scored an excellent free kick in the game against Heracles, and provided an assist in the win over ADO Den Haag, before passing his Manchester United medical with flying colours.
