Speaking to Voetbal International on Thursday, the 29-year-old, who has been without a club since last summer, confirmed his retirement from football.

He said, “I quit football,”

What if his old club Feyenoord came calling? “Then I say no, because I’ve made my choice. I have really stopped.”

Drenthe began his career with Feyenoord and played two years in their first team before moving to Real Madrid in 2007. However, despite a positive start in Spain, the winger failed to impress and spent time on loan with Hercules and Everton before leaving Madrid for Spartak Vladikavkaz in 2013. After a year in Russia, Drenthe returned to England with Reading, but once again he couldn’t settle and spent time on loan with Sheffield Wednesday before moving to the UAE side Baniyas. They proved to be the one time Netherlands internationals final club.

Drenthe will now focus on his rap career under the name Roya2faces.
