Heracles arrived in Venlo on the back of two victories but were without star striker Adrián Dalmau who was suspended.
In the sixth minute the game was halted after a serious knee injury for VVV defender Jerald Promes. The treatment took around 20 minutes as Promes was stretchered off and taken to hospital.
When the action got back underway, Heracles were on top but Lars Unnerstall saved well from Kristoffer Peterson, while at the other end, Patrick Joosten was denied by Janis Blaswich.
VVV improved in the second half but they couldn’t take their chances and eight minutes from time they were hit by a suckerpunch. Nils Röseler put his hand in the back of Lerin Duarte, who felt the contact and fell to the ground. The referee pointed to the spot and VAR saw no reason for it to be overturned.
Mohammed Osman netted from the spot and that proved to be enough for Heracles despite a late onslaught from the home side.
Heracles rise to fifth while VVV are 8th.
