After the disappointment of Netherlands Euro exit, domestic football returned this weekend. We round up how all the Dutchmen fared around Europe’s biggest leagues.

Newcastle United finally recorded their first win of the season on Sunday as they beat Norwich City 6-2. Georginio Wijnaldum was the hero of the day with the midfielder netting four goals. The former PSV star was clinical in front of goal, and become only the second Dutchmen in Premier League history to score four in a single game. Daryl Janmaat also chipped in with an assist for one of Wijnaldum’s goals, while Vurnon Anita put in an impressive performance after coming on at half time. Siem de Jong was an unused substitute.
Louis van Gaal decided to drop Memphis Depay after his underwhelming performances recently and the winger, along with Daley Blind, remained on the bench for all of Manchester United’s 3-0 win at Everton.
Jeremain Lens missed Sunderland’s 1-0 defeat at West Brom due to suspension, while Patrick van Aanholt remained on the bench.
Leandro Bacuna remained on the bench as Aston Villa went down 2-0 at Chelsea.
Nathan Ake was given a torrid time at left back during Watford’s 3-0 defeat to Arsenal, while Steven Berghuis was a late substitute for the Hornets, but failed to make an impact.
Ronald Koeman’s Southampton raced into a 2-0 lead over Leicester City with Virgil van Dijk netting the second goal from close range. However Leicester rallied in the second half and even the introduction of Jordy Clasie for his Premier League debut couldn’t prevent the Foxes from coming back to earn a 2-2 draw. Maarten Stekelenburg missed the tie after suffering from back trouble.
Monday evening’s game saw Stoke City record an impressive 1-0 win at Swansea City with Erik Pieters putting in a good shift at left back for the Potters. Marco van Ginkel and Ibrahim Afellay both appeared from the bench in the second half to help Stoke see out their victory.
German Bundesliga
Klaas jan Huntelaar remained on the bench for Schalke in their 2-1 win over 10-man Hertha Berlin on Saturday. The striker must have had an injury after Netherlands defeat to Czech Republic last week.
Bas Dost headed in his sixth goal of the season to put Wolfsburg 2-0 up in their tie with Hoffenheim. Wolfsburg ended up 4-2 winners.
Paul Verhaegh missed out on the Netherlands squad after suffering from a fever, but he returned to action with Augsburg against Darmstad. Verhaegh couldn’t prevent his side from going down 2-0 though which left his side rooted to the bottom of the table.
Luc Castaignos started for Eintracht Frankfurt in their tie with Borussia Monchengladbach, but the striker was hooked after an hour as his side went down 5-1. Roel Brouwers remained on the bench for Gladbach.
Italian Serie A
Lazio’s trio of Dutchmen Edson Braafheid, Ricardo Kishna and Wesley Hoedt all started on the bench in their tie at Sassuolo. With his side losing 2-1 Kishna appeared from the bench on 76 minutes but he couldn’t find an equaliser. Stefan de Vrij is still injured.
Atalanta climbed to eighth in the table after a 3-0 win over Carpi. Marten de Roon played the full ninety minutes.
Nigel de Jong remained on the bench for AC Milan in their 1-1 draw with Torino.
Spanish La Liga
Ricky van Wolfswinkel made his second appearance of the season for Real Betis as he came off the bench on 54 minutes. However the forward could not help his side avoid a 3-1 defeat to Espanyol. Rafael van der Vaart is still injured.
French Ligue 1
Both Karim Rekik (Marseille) and Gregory van der Wiel (PSG) were left on the bench for their sides this weekend. Marseille drew 1-1 with Lorient while PSG beat Bastia 2-0.
Robin van Persie was handed a start in Fenerbahce’s tie at Kayserispor and the forward netted the only goal of the game with a ferocious free kick on 29 minutes. For Kayserispor Dutchmen Diego Biseswar and Omer Bayram played the full ninety minutes but could not inspire their side to a comeback.
Wesley Sneijder celebrated the birth of his new son last week by helping Galatasaray beat Genclerbirligi 4-1. The midfielder played 80 minutes of the win.
Ryan Donk played the full ninety minutes of Kasimpasa’s 2-1 win over Sivasspor, which puts his side in fifth place.
Russian Premier League
Quincy Promes was forced to pull out of the Netherlands squad last week, and he started Spartak Moscow’s derby with Lokomotiv Moscow on the bench. With his side losing at the break Promes came off the bench but he couldn’t make much impact in an eventual 2-1 loss for Spartak.
Portuguese Premiera Liga
The Portuguese cup was being played over the weekend with Porto beating Varzim 2-0. Bruno Martins Indi returned to the starting line-up and helped his side keep a clean sheet in a comfortable win.
