Chidera Ejuke scored a double as Heerenveen came from behind to defeat Sparta Rotterdam 2-1.

Henk Fraser decided to give Halil Dervisoglu a rest in Friesland with Lars Veldwijk chosen to start up front.

That decision paid off in the 26th minute when Veldwijk headed in a Abdou Harroui cross to give Sparta the lead.

Before the opener, Heerenveen were the better side but Rodney Kongolo had a goal disallowed for handball, while Ricardo van Rhijn hit the woodwork.

After the break, Veldwijk missed two good chances to kill the game for Sparta before he was eventually substituted for Dervisoglu. At the other end, Ejuke put the ball wide with the goal gaping.

In the 73rd minute, Ejuke made up for that miss with a curling effort from a tight angle. Six minutes later, Ejuke dribbled past his opponent into the box before firing low through Ariel Harush’s legs to give Heerenveen the lead.

It could have been a hattrick in the final seconds but Ejuke fired wide with the goal empty.

The victory moves Heerenveen up to 6th while Sparta are 11th.
