Groningen have strengthened their position in the top eight after a 1-0 victory over Willem II on Sunday.

Groningen impressively held high-flying Vitesse Arnhem to a draw last week and they were the stronger side against Willem II from the start. Damil Dankerlui and Patrick Joosten missed decent chances to open the scoring in the first half.

In the 63rd minute, Groningen finally took the lead when El Messaoudi slotted a pass from Tomas Suslov past goalkeeper Jorn Brondeel.

Willem II barely threatened an equaliser and Groningen held on for a victory which keeps them 8th but they are now seven points ahead of Utrecht, who sit ninth.

Willem II’s struggles continue and they are 14th.
