AZ Alkmaar had been flying up the table in recent weeks and went into the game on a seven game unbeaten run, but they fell apart against Utrecht on Saturday.
On 11 minutes a free kick from Tommy Oar was powerfully headed past Esteban by Edouard Duplan, who then added a second just before the half hour mark with a neat turn and finish into the corner.
The home side were shell-shocked and on 37 minutes Utrecht midfielder Mark Diemers smashed a long range effort into the top corner to make it 3-0 for the away side.
AZ looked for a way back into the game in the second half, but despite their best efforts the 3-0 deficit proved too fatal and Utrecht comfortably held on.
Utrecht climb to ninth place, while AZ sit fifth.
