Excelsior are lingering just above the relegation zone in 14th after five games without a win, but the Rotterdam side went on the attack from the start and Sander Fischer was unlucky not to open the scoring when he saw his effort come back off the post.
Bartholomew Ogbeche wasted two good chances for Cambuur, while just before the break a quick Excelsior counter ended with Ninos Gouriye’s firing a shot past Leonard Nienhuis, but the ball rolled along the goal-line to safety.
Seven minutes into the second half the visitors took the lead when Jeff Stans sent Adil Auassar through on the left, and the midfielder sent a fierce strike into the top corner.
Cambuur pushed for an equaliser and after several missed chances, the leveller finally came in injury time with Ogbeche capitalising on a terrible error from the Excelsior defender Kevin van Diermen before beating Coutinho.
The draw sees Excelsior move four points ahead of the bottom three, while Cambuur climb one place to eighth.
