PSV went into the match on the back of the lacklustre defeat to Roda JC in the KNVB Cup midweek, and they were once again second best early on against a determined Cambuur side. Striker Bartholemew Ogbeche fired wide from inside the box, while on loan midfielder Sinan Bytyqi could only shoot straight at Jeroen Zoet as PSV struggled to get a foothold on the game.
However five minutes before the break Jetro Willems sent a perfect cross into the box for Georginio Wijnaldum to flick a header into the net and PSV had the lead. It could have been 2-0 before the break but Luuk de Jong sent a header over the bar from close range.
Sander van de Streek passed up a good opportunity to put Cambuur level in the second half as he could only head a corner over, and twenty minutes before the end PSV sealed the points. A cross from Santiago Arias was cleverly headed past Leonard Nienhuis by Memphis Depay for the wingers 11th league goal of the season.
Cambuur made it an exciting end when Daniel de Ridder sent a free kick into the top corner, but despite five minutes of extra time there was too be no equaliser.
It was another hard fought away win for PSV, and they have piled all the pressure on Ajax, who face third placed Feyenoord on Sunday. If Ajax fail to win then PSV will be seven points clear and in pole position to end the Amsterdam sides strong hold on the title. Cambuur remain 7th.
