Dordrecht won their first game of the season at Heerenveen, but had since gone 17 matches without victory and were firmly rooted to the bottom of the table going into the match against Excelsior who were on a high after beating Heracles 3-0 last week.
In the first half Dordrecht were on top of possession without creating a clear cut chance, while at the other end Tom van Weert had Excelsior’s best opportunity, but couldn’t beat Filip Kurto.
On 64 minutes, Mart Lieder proved to be the hero for Dordrecht as the forward took advantage of terrible defending by Jurgen Mattheij before steering the ball into the corner. The last 25 minutes were a nervous wait for the home crowd, but Dordrecht held on to give themselves hope of avoiding the drop.
Dordrecht are now only three points behind 17th placed NAC Breda and it remains to be seen whether the win will give them the confidence to beat the drop. Excelsior remain 13th.
