An injury hit Heerenveen succumb to a heavy 3-0 defeat to Excelsior in Rotterdam on Sunday.

0000 exceheeThe Frisian side were missing Joey van den Berg, Jordy Buijs, Lerin Duarte and Sam Larsson through injury, and the young side put out by Dwight Lodeweges were behind in the first five minutes when Luigi Bruins weaved his way into the box before beating Kristoffer Nordfeldt with a low strike.

Excelsior continued to dominate for the rest of the first half, but Daryl van Mieghem was denied by Nordfeldt while Jeff Stans sent a long range effort over the bar. Four minutes into the second half Excelsior did double their lead with Jordon Botaka’s cross into the box was smashed into the net by an in form Tom Van Weert, who netted his third in two games.

Heerenveen barely threatened and in injury time Excelsior added a third through Kevin Vermeulen, who cut in from the left before firing an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

With the win Excelsior climb a place to 13th, while Heerenveen remain 7th.
