AZ Alkmaar escaped from Excelsior with a point after coming from behind three times.

az-exThe home side came out of the blocks quickly and took the lead on nine minutes with Stanley Elbers tapping in Kevin Vermeulen’s cross. However, two minutes later Robert Muhren equalised after good work on the wing by Maumer Tankovic.

On 25 minutes, Wout Weghorst fouled Jurgen Mattheij to earn Excelsior a penalty, which was netted by Nigel Hasselbaink. Once again the lead was short-lived, though, as Ridgeciano Haps set up Tankovic to beat Tom Muyters and make it 2-2 at the break.

Twenty minutes into the second half Excelsior found the lead again after Illias Bel Hassani lost possession sloppily which led to Hicham Faik firing past Sergio Rochet. However, AZ were not to be beaten as Stijn Wuytens headed in their third equaliser of the night.

The point means AZ drop to fifth while Excelsior are 12th.
