The previous meeting between the two sides provided the game of the season so far in December as a last minute Memphis Depay goal gave PSV a 4-3 win, which provided a catalyst to them storming ahead at the top. The return at De Kuip nearly got off to a stunning start when Elvis Manu’s cross found Lex Immers alone in the box, but from a few yards out the midfielder could only fire wide.
After the chance the first half became a scrappy affair, which was halted by several silly fouls. PSV should have been ahead at the break with Memphis Depay shooting straight at Kenneth Vermeer from a good position before Adam Maher smashed a stunning effort off the crossbar.
Feyenoord thought they were awarded a penalty early in the second half when the referee pointed to the spot for a handball by Luciano Narsingh, but the decision was overruled for an offside in the build up.
On the hour mark Feyenoord had the lead in stunning style as Rick Karsdorp’s long ball forward was hooked first time into the corner by Anass Achahbar. PSV nearly equalised straight away when Memphis Depay raced through on goal, but his shot at the end flew just over the bar.
On 63 minutes Feyenoord made it 2-0 through another stunning strike by Achahbar, who chested down Jean Paul Boetius cross before smashing a volley into the bottom corner. PSV responded five minutes later with Depay catching out Vermeer with a long range strike which flew into the bottom corner.
Luuk de Jong sent a free header wide as PSV pushed for an equaliser, while Elvis Manu and Boetius saw efforts blocked at the other end. Despite five minutes of added time PSV could not find a leveler and they lose for the fifth time in a row at De Kuip.
PSV’s lead at the top could be closed to eight points by Ajax, while Feyenoord move four points clear of AZ in the race for third.
