Go Ahead Eagles provided one of the shocks of last week when they recorded a 1-0 victory at PEC Zwolle, but the Deventer club failed to lift their game against an AZ side that dominated from the kick off. Steven Berghuis and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw both had chances before AZ eventually took the lead on 33 minutes when Simon Poulsen fired in from close range after the home defence failed to clear a corner.
On 58 minutes Dabney dos Santos was allowed far too much room to roam forward and the youngster fed Robert Muhren to fire in AZ Alkmaar’s second.
Strikers Alex Schalk and Marnix Kolder were thrown on to find a solution for Go Ahead, but AZ Alkmaar were barely troubled as they held on for the win. Go Ahead Eagles now sit dangerously in 15th place and only three points above the relegation zone, while AZ leapfrog Feyenoord into third.
