Feyenoord are still in danger of losing third place after being held to a 1-1 draw by Groningen at the Eurborg on Sunday.

grofey claVitesse’s defeat to ADO Den Haag on Friday had opened up the opportunity for Feyenoord to all but confirm their place in the Europa League next season, but they will now be looking over their shoulders after being held by Groningen.

The game exploded into life midway through the first half when Kenneth Vermeer had to make an excellent save to deny Tjaronn Chery, while Simon Tibbling failed to convert after Miquel Nelom’s poor back-pass. On 25 minutes Feyenoord, who were playing in their new away kit, made Groningen pay for their missed chances as Jordy Clasie smashed a shot past Sergio Padt with help from a deflection.

Groningen equalised just before the break in spectacular fashion as Chery sent an excellent 30-yard free kick into the top corner.

In the second half the best chances to win the game fell to Groningen, with Juninho Bacuna firing wide, while Hans Hateboer had a goal rightly chalked off by the linesman. Feyenoord were forced to play the last few minutes with ten men after Khalid Boulahrouz saw red for a slap, but Groningen failed to take advantage.

Feyenoord are now only three points above AZ Alkmaar with two games to go, while Groningen remain on course for eighth place.
