Both sides went into the game on the back of disappointing results in the Europa League with Marseille outclassing Groningen 3-0, while AZ suffered a 3-2 defeat in Serbia to Partizan Belgrade.
It was AZ who were showing signs of a European hangover as the home side took the lead on 31 minutes with Bryan Linssen finishing from close range after Sergio Rochet parried Danny Hoesen’s shot.
Groningen should have made it 2-0 early in the second half with Linssen’s cross finding Michael de Leeuw at the back post, but with the goal gaping the forward could only fire well wide and over.
AZ threw on Robert Muhren and Vincent Janssen late on, but they failed to lift their side and in injury time substitute Mimoum Mahi raced through the defence before beating Rochet to seal Groningen’s win.
The three points lift Groningen to eighth while AZ stay 12th.
