The home side went into the game on the back of five straight matches without a win, which have all but ended their chances of making the end of season play-offs. However Edwin van de Looi’s side dominated from the start against Dordrecht and nearly took the lead in the first five minutes, but Tjarron Chery’s shot crept just wide.
Groningen continued to push forward, but they were denied by goalkeeper Filip Kurto, who made great reflex saves from Nick van der Velden and Mimoun Mahi. Eventually the opening goal did come for the home side in the 44th minute as Albert Rusnak spun his marker in the box before firing past Kurto.
Dordrecht barely threatened an equaliser in the second half, and Chery, who lost his best friend to a car accident midweek, sealed the three points in injury time with a lovely finish into the bottom corner after bursting into the box.
Groningen climb to eight but are still seven points off Heerenveen in 7th, while Dordrecht stay four points off second bottom side NAC Breda.
