Groningen last tasted defeat at the Euroborg last March (0-2 v Feyenoord) and they seemed to be on route to victory against AZ when Tjarron Chery’s free kick was deflected past Esteban by Steven Berghuis after eight minutes. It was 2-0 on 37 minutes when Michael de Leeuw found the net after Esteban parriedĀ Maikel Kieftenbeld’s effort.
However AZ were not disheartened and in first half injury time Berghuis slid Nemanja Gudelj’s cross in at the back post to give the AZ side hope going into the second period. AZ appeared from the break a different side, putting Groningen under immense pressure and just before the half hour mark Jeffrey Gouweleeuw equalised from a corner.
On 65 minutes Robert Muhren flicked on in the box and Markus Henriksen controlled the ball before sliding it into the bottom corner to make it 3-2 to AZ. Henriksen then sealed AZ’s brilliant comeback eight minutes from time, firing Berghuis’s pass into the top corner.
AZ climb above PEC Zwolle into fourth with the win, while Groningen slip to 10th.
