Groningen sealed their place in the KNVB Cup final midweek with an excellent 3-0 win over Excelsior, and Edwin van de Looi’s side got off to a flying start against Cambuur. After only 45 seconds Tjarron Chery rifled an excellent strike into the top corner from just outside the box to give Groningen the early lead.
However the home side’s defence lost their concentration and on six minutes Mikhael Roshuevel ghosted unseen to the back post to tap Bartholomew Ogbeche’s shot into the net. Just before the half hour mark Eric Botteghin could only direct a clearance into his own net and Cambuur were ahead.
Groningen equalised ten minutes into the second half when Simon Tibbling beat one defender before sending a low strike into the bottom corner from 25-yards, and the home side completed the comeback on 81 minutes as Nick van der Velden profited from Mohamed El Makrini back pass before lobbing the ball over Leonarn Nienhuis.
The win means Groningen move level on points with Cambuur and Willem II who occupy the ninth and eight places in the table. The trio all have the chance to reach the end of season play-offs should PEC Zwolle win the KNVB Cup.
