Feyenoord began the game confidently and after Lex Immers had a goal disallowed they took the lead on the half hour mark when Colin Kazim Richards struck a powerful shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.
The away side looked dangerous in attack, but at the back they were a shambles with the usually solid Terence Kongolo constantly found out of position, and just before half time midfielder Simon Thern was allowed space outside the box to fire into the bottom corner. Just before the hour mark Heerenveen had the lead thanks to a huge error from Kenneth Vermeer, who could not keep out Sam Larsson’s shot, despite getting his hands to it.
Kazim Richards had an excellent chance to equalise for Feyenoord, but the striker could only send a header wide from yards out. As Feyenoord pushed forward Heerenveen found the killer blow on the counter attack as Sam Larsson found space on the left before curling past Vermeer.
The defeat means Feyenoord may lose third place to PEC Zwolle if they beat Dordrecht, while Heerenveen remain 7th.
