Heerenveen lost the Frisian derby 2-1 to Cambuur last week and started on the backfoot against Groningen with Albert Rusnak and Michael de Leeuw missing good chances for the away side early on.
However ten minutes before the break Simon Thern put the home side ahead with a nice finish after playing a one-two with Pelle van Amersfoort.
Mimoun Mahi nearly equalised in spectacular fashion before the break but after waltzing through the Heerenveen defence his shot clipped the post and ran wide. Five minutes into the second half the scores where level when Tjarron Chery set up De Leeuw for his thirteenth of the season.
Groningen were only level for nine minutes before Joost van Aken restored Heerenveen’s lead from a corner. On 83 minutes Marten de Roon was shown his second yellow card, but despite playing with ten men Heerenveen sealed the win in injury time through Henk Peersman.
Heerenveen remain sixth with the win while Groningen are in 11th.
