The match got off to flying start with AZ Alkmaar taking the lead in the first minute as Aron Johannsson’s ball across the box was fired past Kristoffer Nordfeldt by Steven Berghuis.
Heerenveen pushed forward looking for the equaliser, which eventually came in first half injury time when Stefan Marzo’s ball across the box was tapped back to Simon Thern by Joey van den Berg and the midfielder fired past Esteban.
On 57 minutes the home side were ahead with Luciano Slagveer steering Pele van Aanholt’s cross into the net. However a minute later Berghuis netted his second with an acute chip over Nordfeldt to level the scores.
Winger Sam Larsson then proved to be the difference, firstly firing a low shot past Esteban from the edge of the box on 75 minutes before racing through the defence to slide a finish under the advancing AZ keeper. Joey van den Berg then smashed a volley into the net from the edge of the box to seal the emphatic win.
AZ Alkmaar drop to fifth after another heavy defeat, while Heerenveen are two points behind them in sixth.
