After the defeat to PSV midweek, Feyenoord knew they could not afford another slip up if they are to have any chance of returning to the title race. Fred Rutten’s side had a major scare on 28 minutes when Erik Falkenburg put the ball in the net, but the goal was rightly ruled out for offside.
Feyenoord took the lead on 32 minutes as Colin Kazim Richards escaped the offside trap from Luke Wilkshire’s pass and the striker blasted the ball past Jelle ten Rouwelaar from a tight angle. The goal was Kazim Richards seventh of the season, which makes this campaign the most prolific of his career so far.
NAC Breda, who were hammered 6-0 by Excelsior in the KNVB Cup on Thursday, could not find a way past a tight Feyenoord defence in the second half, and although the Rotterdam side controlled possession they could not add a second goal.
Feyenoord climb above PEC Zwolle and into third, while NAC Breda remain 2nd bottom.
