With one eye on the KNVB Cup semi final with FC Twente on Tuesday, PEC Zwolle coach Ron Jans decided to rest Ryan Thomas and Tomas Necid, in what was a battle between 7th and 8th placed in the league. In a poor first half PEC Zwolle came the closest to opening the scoring just after the half hour mark, but Jesper Drost’s header was cleared off the line by Robbie Haemhouts.
Necid came off the bench with 20 minutes to go, and his deflected shot resulted in the corner which was blasted in at the back post by Bram van Polen to give PEC Zwolle the lead. Wout Brama missed a good chance to further the home side’s advantage, while goalkeeper Warner Hahn denied Mitchell Dijks from scoring Willem II a late equaliser.
PEC Zwolle now sit in 6th place, and eight points ahead of Willem II, who are outside the play-off spots in eighth.
