PSV Eindhoven were far from their best but they managed to scrape a 2-1 win over an impressive Groningen.

wij psvgrDespite Groningen making a strong start, PSV took the lead on ten minutes when Georginio Wijnaldum played a one-two with Luuk de Jong before curling a shot into the bottom corner. The away side were not disheartened by the goal, and they should have equalised minutes later but Nick van der Velden sent a free header wide of the post.

On 26 minutes a lovely ball from Memphis Depay found Wijnaldum in the box, and after the midfielder had his legs taken away, the referee awarded a spot kick. Luuk de Jong won the battle to take it, but his weak effort was parried by Sergio Padt, and despite Depay netting the rebound it was disallowed for encroaching.

Groningen deservedly equalised just before the break as a corner was powerfully headed into the bottom corner by Eric Botteghin, and the away side started the second half well on top with PSV’s defence having to make some last ditch challenges to prevent Edwin van de Looi’s side taking the lead.

PSV improved as the half went on with Depay setting up both Wijnaldum and Andres Guardado to waste good chances, before Nicolas Isimat Marin hooked a corner into the bottom corner to restore the home sides lead.

The goal deflated Groningen and PSV created chance after chance to seal the win, but De Jong, Depay, Narsingh and Wijnaldum all passed up good chances as the match ended 2-1.

PSV maintain their 11 point gap over Ajax at the top, while Groningen slip to 11th.
