With Vitesse and Feyenoord dropping points this weekend, the door opened for AZ Alkmaar to close the gap on third place, and after ten minutes they were ahead against Twente with defender Wesley Hoedt sending a cheeky overhead kick into the net.
AZ Alkmaar were by far the better side in the first half, and just before the break they doubled their lead when Mattias Johansson cut the ball back into the six yard box for Aron Johannsson to finish past Nick Marsman. Twente improved slightly after the second goal, but they failed to trouble Esteban in the AZ goal, with Renato Tapia’s overhead kick which flew over the closest they came.
With twenty minutes to go Nemanja Gudej was shown his second yellow card for a nasty kick on Jesus Corona, but despite being reduced to ten men AZ Alkmaar comfortably held on for the three points.
AZ now climb above Vitesse into fourth, and are just three points behind Feyenoord with two games to go. Twente can’t wait for the season to end with the Enschede side sliding down the table to 12th.
