Twente’s chances of finishing third took another blow as they were shocked 3-1 by Excelsior in Enschede.

01 exctweTwente slipped down the table after being defeated 2-0 at ADO Den Haag, but Alfred Schreuder’s side started strongly against Excelsior with Luc Castaignos seeing a shot come back off the woodwork early on.

Against the run of play Excelsior took the lead as Jeff Stans curled a free kick into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, but Twente struck back almost immediately through Jesus Corona who swept Youness Mokhtar’s cross past Damen.

At the start of the second half Jesus Corona cutback perfectly for Castaignos, but the striker hit fresh air instead of the ball, and on 52 minutes Excelsior retook the lead with Daan Bovenberg smashing past Sonny Stevens from a corner.

Twente pushed for an equaliser but they failed to trouble Damen in the Excelsior goal and five minutes from time Excelsior sealed their win through Kevin Vermeulen.

The win lifts Excelsior up a place to 12th while Twente will slip to 7th if Heerenveen beat PEC Zwolle.
