Utrecht have had a difficult week after midfielder Anouar Kali was involved in a scuffle with Kristoffer Peterson which left the Swedish winger with a broken jaw. Kali took his place in the starting eleven, but was booed by his own fans.
On the pitch Utrecht’s week didn’t get any better as they fell behind to PEC Zwolle just before the break with Thomas Lam scoring from close range after Sheraldo Becker’s shot was parried by Robbin Ruiter.
Utrecht had a lot of possession but failed to turn that into chances, although Christian Kum saw an effort cleared from the line by Ben Rienstra.
With ten minutes to go PEC Zwolle sealed the three points when Timo Letschert lost the ball in the final third which resulted in Stef Nijland getting behind the defence before slotting past Ruiter into the bottom corner.
PEC Zwolle climb back above Twente in fourth while Utrecht sit 10th.
