Utrecht took control from the beginning and after only two minutes Kristoffer Petterson was handed a great opportunity, but the winger couldn’t convert on the rebound after Yassine Ayoub’s shot was stopped by Nordfelt. The Heerenveen keeper also made a good stop from Ramon Leeuwin’s header while a scramble in the box also saw Edouard Duplan, Leeuwin and Willem Janssen all fail to convert.
Four minutes before the break the visitors made Utrecht pay as Luciano Slagveer cut in from the right before sending a low strike into the bottom corner off the post.
Utrecht searched for an equaliser after the break, but it was Heerenveen who found the net again after the hour mark as Mark Uth’s cross was slammed past Robbin Ruiter by Sam Larsson.
In the last minute Utrecht were awarded a penalty which Janssen dispatched, but it proved to be too late and the away side held on for the win.
