Excelsior began the game just above the drop zone, and still had a chance of being caught by either NAC Breda or Go Ahead Eagles. However with Go Ahead Eagles and NAC Breda both failing to win, and Excelsior earning a point, the Rotterdam side are definitely on safe.
After a tepid first half the deadlock was broken on the hour mark when Yassine Ayoub was tripped in the box by Sander Fischer, and Sebastian Haller fired in from the penalty spot.
However back came Excelsior on 75 minutes when Tom van Weert slid the ball past Robbin Ruiter, and four minutes later the striker found the net again to put his side 2-1 ahead.
Utrecht equalised with six minutes left as Danny Verbeek curled in a free kick, but Excelsior held on for the crucial point which confirms their safety.
