AZ have been excellent recently, winning five of their last six matches, but they were a shadow of that team against Utrecht who romped into a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes.
With just over a minute on the clock when Sebastian Haller crossed for Willem Janssen to head in, and eight minutes later it was 2-0 with Mark Diemers volleying an unstoppable strike into the bottom corner. AZ were rocked and it was soon 3-0 from a Haller penalty after a handball in the box.
John van den Brom showed his fury at half time by making all three changes, and it was one of the substitutes Aron Johannsson who pulled a goal back on 56 minutes from a Guus Hupperts cross. However any chance of a comeback was ended on 69 minutes when Haye was deemed to handle in the box, and Haller once again netted from the spot.
Kristoffer Peterson brilliantly curled in Utrecht’s 5th goal, before AZ netted another consolation through a Gevero Markiet og. In the final minute Utrecht put more shine on their win as Edouard Duplan added a sixth.
Utrecht now sit 11th in the table, while AZ Alkmaar are now 4th.
