Ajax’s win over Groningen on Friday put the pressure on PSV to get the three points, and after only ten minutes they took the lead. Luuk de Jong’s flick was stopped by Eloy Room, and although Adam Maher’s follow up hit the post, the midfielder took his second chance and looped it over the stranded Vitesse keeper.
Both sides created good chances before the break with Zakaria Labyad’s curling effort clawed away by Jeroen Zoet, while at the other end Memphis Depay’s free kick was brilliantly stopped by Room.
Luuk de Jong headed against the post in the second half, but the last 20 minutes of the second half saw Vitesse lay siege to the PSV penalty box in search of an equaliser. The closest they came was through Renato Ibarra’s fierce shot from a tight angle, but with Zoet beaten the ball came off the post.
It wasn’t a vintage PSV performance, but they ground out the three points with Jeffrey Bruma especially impressive in defence, and that could prove crucial in the race for the title. Vitesse stay 10th.
