Groningen may have the chance to qualify for the Europa League after reaching KNVB cup final, but should they lose to PEC Zwolle it will open up eighth place to reach the end of season play-offs, and they moved into pole position for it after beating Willem II.
After only seven minutes Jarchinio Antonia raced down the right and after bursting into the box, the winger brilliantly lifted the ball over Kostas Lamprou to give the visitors the lead. On 21 minutes the lead was doubled as Tjarron Chery struck a low shot into the net for his 12th of the season.
Michael de Leeuw added a third for Groningen on the hour mark, before Willem II pulled one back through Ali Messaoud’s strike from a tight angle on 67 minutes. The chance of a comeback failed to materialise and Chery rounded off the win on the counter in injury time.
Groningen move into eighth, while Willem II sit 10th.
