Friday, 24th February

Sparta Rotterdam v FC Utrecht

Surely these two sides will be amongst the four that finish in the European play-offs come the end of May. At the moment, Utrecht sit beneath their hosts, but I think they are stronger in terms of player quality than Sparta, which may tell on Friday night. I’m thinking this will either be a draw or a narrow away win.

Saturday, 25th February

FC Groningen v Excelsior

Groningen have been passing up opportunity after opportunity lately against direct opponents in the table to dig themselves out of trouble. This is another one of those games. I predicted them to gain three points last weekend, and I will do the same this time, too, even though I do think they are doomed to a surprise relegation.

2-1

Heerenveen v RKC Waalwijk

Heerenveen will be pleased having got back to winning ways with a derby win over Cambuur last Sunday. What’s more, Osame Sahraoui scored his first goal for the club, and I am sure he will go on to have a superb time in Friesland. RKC are keen to leapfrog their opponents in the table into a neat eighth spot, but I think Heerenveen, at home, will show their quality.

2-0

AZ Alkmaar v Cambuur

Even though AZ were disappointing in their loss to Feyenoord last weekend, they should get back on track here. I have found Jesper Karlsson to be very inconsistent this season, almost like if he isn’t mentally up for a game, he will go invisible. Still three points remaining in Alkmaar though.

3-1

NEC Nijmegen v FC Volendam

NEC still have the potential to put a run of wins together to push them into the top half and potentially the European play-off spots. All season though, they throw a completely unexpected performance and disappoint their supporters. After a 3-0 success at Excelsior, they could build on that with a win over Volendam. The visitors have picked up fourteen points from their eight league games since the Winter break — a very impressive return for a side that were doomed to finish in the bottom two. Given’s NEC’s record of drawing matches, Volendam could extend their little run.

2-2

Sunday, 26th February

Fortuna Sittard v Feyenoord

Feyenoord keep winning games. They have salvaged either a draw or a win in the 90th minute or later four times in 2023 so far. This feels like their special season. This is a tough test away to Fortuna, who will be spearheaded by the in-form Burak Yilmaz. Feyenoord lack some inspiration in attack at times, but they have a solid defence who will be able to keep Burak at bay.

0-1

Vitesse Arnhem v Ajax

Last weekend, Vitesse lost to Volendam in slightly disappointing fashion, and now they enter a run of tough-looking games. Despite Ajax’s European efforts on Thursday, I think they will have enough about them now that Johnny Heitinga has restored some confidence and goals back into the side to win in Arnhem without too much trouble.

0-2

FC Emmen v Go Ahead Eagles

A big home game here for Emmen in their fight for survival. At this stage, it can be less about quality and more about will to win three points. I think Dick Lukkien is a manager who can evoke that kind of reaction from his team, and despite Go Ahead picking up a nice win over Twente last weekend, they could find themselves in a battle their lofty mid-table perch doesn’t prepare themselves for.

2-1

PSV v FC Twente

Whilst Twente don’t usually pull up too many trees away from home, this is an important game for PSV to win and they will find Twente a difficult team to get past. With a few injuries to the forward line and the departures of Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke, PSV may find Ron Jans’s men frustrating.
