ten-hag-utrUtrecht are currently languishing down in 16th place in the Eredivisie table after only one win so far this season and were routed 5-1 at home by Groningen at the weekend. However, the club recovered to beat FC Twente 3-1 in the KNVB Cup thanks to two goals from Richairo Zivkovic.

Speaking to NOS in the run up to the game, Erik ten Hag said, “The fact that 3 of our key players ( Timo Letschert, Ruud Boymans & Bart Ramselaar ) left in the transfer window so late is one of the reasons why we have suffered a sluggish start to the season. We have to look forward and not back and we have to focus on forming a team again that is going to win games.

”We have to put forward new idea’s and work really hard together. With the exception of last Friday’s match against FC Groningen which was a terrible and completely below average performance we have created chances to win in every game that we have played so far this season.

”FC Utrecht is a cup fighter and this squad is fully aware of what they can achieve in the cup and they noticed that last year when the reached the final in terms of it giving themselves a lift, the club and the city. You must also not forget that winning a cup is the shortest route to success and playing in Europe.”
