Groningen manager Erwin Van de Looi spoke to the NOS of his anger and disappointment in conceding a last minute goal away against Heracles in Almelo and therefore ending a good year for Groningen in which they won the Dutch Cup and experienced European football on a sour note.

van de looiGroningen took a first half lead in Almelo before conceding twice in the second half to condemn them to defeat.

Van de Looi said, ”I thought we were average tonight we knew exactly what would happen here in Almelo against an opponent who gives a lot of energy.

”It a shame the the winning goal came in the last minute but we had chances and we cannot in any way claim that we were justified to win tonight.

”We were not sharp enough.

”You know in such a game on AstroTurf that you must be prepared to run and keep running. The difference in individual performance and quality could also be questioned tonight and also knowing what it takes in order to be prepared for games we did that well the last few weeks with us being unbeaten in 7 matches.

”The last time we lost was Vitesse Arnhem away at the start of October. We have had a great year and it’s painful to finish at the winter break in this manner.”
