AZ Alkmaar put in a poor performance as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Dundee United in the first leg of their Europa Conference League third qualifying round tie.

AZ were without Jesper Karlsson, Zinho Vanheusden, Yuki Sugawara, Jens Odgaard, Peer Koopmeiners and new addition Riechedly Bazoer. Pascal Jansen’s side struggled from the start to create anything of note with Mayckel Lahdo heading the only chance wide.
It did not improve after the break and Dundee United had the lead after an hour with Glenn Middleton combining with Jamie McGrath before firing into the left corner.
AZ only came alive with two minutes left as Vangelis Pavlidis forced goalkeeper Mark Birighitti into a fine save, while Bruno Martins Indi had a shot blocked.
AZ now needs to turn the tie around in Alkmaar next week if they are to progress.
