Roger Schmidt decided to leave Cody Gakpo, Noni Madueke and Mohamed Ihattaren on the bench for the club’s first European tie of the campaign. Mauro Junior and Bruma came in along with Max Romero, who made his first start for the club.
It was a reward for Romero, who scored the winning goal against Emmen at the weekend. However, after only nine minutes the striker went down injured and was replaced by Gakpo.
PSV’s first chance of the game resulted in a goal in the 17th minute with Donyell Malen heading in a Philipp Max free-kick. However, the lead only lasted three minutes before Nino Kouter equalised for the hosts.
In the 28th minute, Max got his second assist of the game as he crossed for Mauro Junior to restore PSV’s lead.
Early in the second half, Yvon Mvogo prevented Mura from equalising with an excellent save, and in the 55th minute, Gakpo made it 3-1.
Malen then made it 4-1 on the hour mark before Gakpo got his second of the evening late on to seal the victory.
Next week, PSV will travel to Norway for a tricky tie against Rosenborg after they defeated Alanyaspor 1-0.
